“It’s not just the digital tools that we use to make our designs; it’s actually the infrastructure behind how we function as well.”
Toronto-based Turner Fleischer has nurtured a culture of continuous learning and innovation for its team of 250 professionals. Founded in 1974, this approach has been instrumental to its success, whether in small- or large-scale architecture projects, interior design, or experiential graphic design.
Central to their strategy for knowledge sharing is their Digital Practices Department, led by Brent Mauti, Chief Technology Officer. Joining the firm in 2020, Mauti brings over 22 years of expertise as both a practicing architect and a technology leader. His influence extends beyond the firm; he also sits on the board of Building Smart Canada that focuses on digitizing build assets throughout Canada.
Analyzing Technology Needs
Shortly after his arrival at Turner Fleischer, Mauti analyzed their technology solutions. A peer recommended TonicDM. “We were already using another provider for project information management, yet I liked that TonicDM was 100% cloud-based, with a reasonable subscription cost, that offered a seamless integration with Microsoft Outlook,” says Mauti.
The switch to TonicDM’s software in August 2021 was a milestone. “It was one of my easiest implementations,” recalls Mauti. One unexpected benefit of the transition was having access to the data. As a Power BI expert, being able to to work through the API and connect to the data was satisfying. “Having access to the data so that TurnerFleischer can make decisions based on that information has been important,” he says.
The Changing Role of CTO
For Mauti, the role of a CTO encompasses more than overseeing architectural technology; it involves shaping their entire operational infrastructure. “It’s not just the digital tools that we use to make our designs, it’s actually the infrastructure that supports how we function,” he says.
Starting out as an architect that used technology to be more efficient and then moving into technology leadership roles, throughout his career Brent has embraced the power of transformation. Reflecting on this, he comments, “Being able to play a part in enacting change excites me. It means we are creating more advocates to lead industry-wide transformation.”
